Imminent Return of Pochettino to Spurs Unlikely Due to US Compensation Package

United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino, the head coach of the United States, has expressed his desire to return to Tottenham Hotspur in the future. However, the prospect of him leaving his current position to join Spurs anytime soon is unlikely due to a huge compensation fee required by the United States Soccer Federation. Pochettino's current contract with the US team extends beyond the 2026 World Cup, which they are hosting, and his salary is not the only factor contributing to the compensation package.

The Argentine coach led Tottenham to second and third-place finishes in the Premier League and a Champions League final during his tenure from 2014 to 2019. His recent comments have fueled speculation about his potential return to Tottenham, should Ange Postecoglou lose his job before next season. However, sources close to Pochettino indicate that he is fully committed to leading the US team to the World Cup.

Tottenham are currently in 14th place in the Premier League and their wait for a domestic trophy will extend into next season after being eliminated from both cup competitions. The club's performance this season has left Postecoglou under scrutiny, but they still have a chance to win the Europa League and qualify for next season's Champions League.

Pochettino's record as US head coach currently stands at five wins and three losses. His recent losses to Panama and Canada have caused some negativity, but he has quickly moved to quell disquiet, stating that the team has time to improve and design a better strategy ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
