Concacaf Voices Opposition to Proposed 64-Team World Cup for 2030

Concacaf President Victor Montagliani criticizes Conmebol's proposal to expand the 2030 Men's World Cup to 64 teams, a move that has also been opposed by Uefa's Aleksander Ceferin and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The tournament, which will be hosted by Spain, Morocco, and Portugal, will mark the competition's 100-year anniversary, but Montagliani believes expanding the tournament further could negatively impact the football ecosystem. The 2026 World Cup, set to take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, has already been expanded from 32 to 48 teams, but Conmebol seeks to add more participants. If the proposed expansion to 64 teams is accepted at Fifa's 75th congress in May, the tournament would consist of 128 matches, double the number in the current 64-game format. Opponents argue that such an expansion could lead to chaos, with the potential for further increases in team numbers.
