Ipswich Town's rapid promotion from League One to the Premier League ended in relegation following a 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday. The Tractor Boys, who had been braced for the return to the Championship, finished the season in 19th place, 12 points adrift of safety. Defender Luke Woolfenden was dispirited, admitting, "We've not been at it this season. I think we have probably let ourselves down one too many times."
Ipswich's relegation is a first for all three promoted sides in the Premier League's history, with Southampton and Leicester City also suffering immediate demotion. The club has lost a league-high 27 points from winning positions, struggled to turn Portman Road into a fortress, and received five red cards - the most in the Premier League this season.
Injuries and a lack of discipline have also contributed to Ipswich's poor performance. Striker Liam Delap, who has scored 12 Premier League goals, is expected to net the club a minimum of £30m due to a relegation release clause in his contract. Other notable players, such as Leif Davis and Omari Hutchinson, may also leave the club this summer.
Ipswich Town's future will be under scrutiny, with manager Kieran McKenna's position and the club's investment plans coming under close examination. McKenna, who had been linked with several top clubs in the past, has expressed his desire to lead Ipswich in the Championship and aims for an immediate return to the Premier League.
