Liverpool Narrowly Averted Missing Out on Salah Signing

Liverpool's decision to sign Mohamed Salah instead of Julian Brandt, as preferred by then-manager Jurgen Klopp, is the focus of this article. Former Liverpool director of research Ian Graham, who worked at the club from 2012 to 2023, explained that data analysis pointed towards Salah as the better young wide forward in Europe. Klopp was open to being convinced, and Liverpool signed Salah from Roma in June 2017 for £34m. Since then, Salah has become a Liverpool legend, scoring 243 goals and registering 109 assists in 393 appearances, helping the Reds win several trophies under Klopp's management. This article also touches upon Liverpool's use of data in recruitment, their Moneyball strategy, and the collaboration between data analysts, scouts, managers, and the club's ownership.
