Former Rochdale midfielder Joe Thompson, a 36-year-old cancer survivor, has passed away at home surrounded by his family. Thompson, who began and ended his career with Rochdale, was found to have stage four lymphoma, which had spread to his lungs after twice recovering from the disease during his playing career. He notably scored the goal that kept Rochdale in League One in 2018 and retired from playing in 2019. Rochdale, Manchester United, Tranmere Rovers, Carlisle United, Bury, and Southport have all paid tribute to Thompson, who won the Sir Tom Finney award in 2019 for his outstanding career and exceptional contributions to football.
