Arsenal Manager on Brink of Historic Coach Legacy, Echoing Wiegman's Success

Renee Slegers

Renee Slegers, the head coach of Arsenal, is set to lead the Gunners in the Women's Champions League final, aiming to replicate Vic Akers' success from 2007. Slegers, a Dutch former player who spent time with Arsenal's academy, has been hailed as the "next Sarina Wiegman" and has risen through the coaching ranks in Europe. Her playing career ended due to a serious knee injury in 2016, and she started coaching after obtaining her Uefa Pro licence. Slegers coached Limhamn Bunkeflo, Sweden's Under-23s, and Rosengard's B team before taking charge of the first team at Rosengard. Following Eidevall's departure from Arsenal, Slegers took over as interim coach and impressed with an unbeaten run in her first 11 games. Her communication skills, confidence-building approach, and tactical acumen have been instrumental in Arsenal's success. In the Champions League final, Arsenal will face Lyon, aiming to end a 16-year trophy drought for British sides in the competition.
