Former Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth is set to return to the Football Association as their first chief football officer, filling a newly created position. Ashworth will lead the FA's high-performance strategy, focusing on developing successful England teams and increasing the number of homegrown coaches. He will also oversee the renovation of St George's Park, the national football center, before Euro 2028.
Previously, Ashworth served as the FA's director of elite development and technical director from 2013 to 2019. After his departure, he held director roles at Brighton & Hove Albion, Newcastle United, and Manchester United, where he spent just five months as sporting director before leaving in December 2024.
"Dan is a hugely influential and respected figure in the game, who has a long-standing commitment to England football," said FA CEO Mark Bullingham.
