Liverpool Eye Blockbuster Move for Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz
Liverpool FC have initiated talks with Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen over a potential move for versatile attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz. The 22-year-old German star has emerged as a key target for new Liverpool manager Arne Slot, with the Premier League champions already planning for next season.
Although formal negotiations are yet to begin, Liverpool are reportedly keen to secure the services of Wirtz, who is valued by Leverkusen at over £120 million. This potential transfer fee would surpass the current British transfer record of £107 million, set by Chelsea for Benfica's Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
Despite the hefty price tag, Wirtz has reportedly expressed a preference for a move to Anfield over Bayern Munich. This development comes after it was revealed that Manchester City are no longer pursuing the player, leaving Liverpool and Bayern as the frontrunners for his signature.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has previously stated that the team would be "stupid" not to strengthen this summer, and he has expressed a desire to bring in players who can help the team improve. While it remains unclear whether Liverpool would be willing to pay the substantial fee required for Wirtz, the club is also set to sign Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen.
