Manchester United announces second round of job cuts post-Europa League final defeat

Manchester United has informed some of its staff that they will lose their jobs in the second round of redundancies since the club was purchased by Sir Jim Ratcliffe last year. These redundancies could potentially affect up to 200 employees, particularly in sports science, medical, and scouting departments. The process has been ongoing for weeks, with most staff already aware of their fate. However, some first-team staff were not informed until after the Europa League final against Tottenham to avoid disrupting preparations. The news comes soon after United's defeat in the final, leading to low morale around the club. The first round of redundancies last year resulted in about 250 employees being made redundant, saving the club between £8m and £10m. Now, United is expected to save between £150m and £200m through these further cuts. The club's chief executive, Omar Berrada, had earlier stated that between 150 and 200 redundancies were set to follow. The decision to cut jobs comes amidst a bleak financial backdrop for United, who have lost more than £370m over the past five years and owe £313m in outstanding transfer payments to other clubs.
