Barcelona Sporting Director Deco Refutes Financial Problems Despite La Liga's Financial Controls

In a conversation with BBC Sport, Barcelona's sporting director, Deco, dismissed rumors of financial difficulties at the club and asserted that they do not need to sell key players. Deco, who has been instrumental in the revival of Barcelona since joining in 2023, highlighted the club's recent domestic treble and Champions League semi-final run.

Deco renewed the contracts of players such as Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, and manager Hansi Flick, while resolving a dispute with the Spanish National Sports Council (CSD) to register Dani Olmo. Barcelona's financial stability was further bolstered by a new contract with Nike and the renovation of the Nou Camp, making it the largest stadium in Europe.

When asked about the club's financial status, Deco emphasized that Barcelona is a well-managed club. He acknowledged the challenging financial fair play rules in Spain but emphasized the importance of balancing the team with a combination of La Masia (Barcelona's academy) players and experienced players.

Deco confirmed that Barcelona is not planning to sell their best players, instead focusing on making "two, three or four signings" without resorting to excessive market activity. He also expressed interest in Manchester United's Marcus Rashford and Liverpool's Luis Diaz, but did not rule out other potential targets.

Addressing Real Madrid's incoming head coach Xabi Alonso, Deco acknowledged the threat they pose but stressed the importance of maintaining strong rivalries within La Liga. He revealed that Barcelona is eyeing Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, and Alvaro Carreras as potential signings.

Barcelona has already secured a significant deal by extending the contract of 17-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal, who has made 106 appearances for the club since his debut at 15. Comparisons have been drawn between Yamal and Barcelona legend Lionel Messi, with Deco stating that Yamal, in terms of quality, has the potential to make history like Messi.
