Southgate: No Longer Pining for England Management Role

Sir Gareth Southgate poses with the award that comes with his knighthood

Former England manager Gareth Southgate, who received his knighthood on Wednesday, says he does not miss managing the Three Lions and carrying the "weight" of the job. Southgate, 54, stepped down from the England role last summer after his side were beaten in the Euro 2024 final by Spain. Under his guidance, England reached two European Championship finals (2020 and 2024), finishing runner-up on both occasions, and achieved their best performance at a World Cup since 1990 with a fourth-place finish at Russia 2018. Despite not missing the job, Southgate says it was a relief to no longer carry the expectations of a nation. Thomas Tuchel replaced Southgate as manager following Lee Carsley's interim spell. England were booed off after losing a friendly against Senegal at the City Ground earlier this month, with Tuchel claiming that Southgate's England did not have a clear identity. Southgate, however, feels it is important for him to give the team and the manager space to operate.
