In the 2024 fiscal year, the Football Association (FA) defended paying chief executive Mark Bullingham £1.32m, which includes a £450,000 bonus, stating that he surpassed specified targets. According to reports, Bullingham is the highest-earning chief executive of a sports governing body in the UK.
The FA's annual accounts, published on July 2024, show an increase in turnover to £551.2m, up £69.4m from the previous year, with a net profit of £49.7m. Despite Rugby Football Union chief executive Bill Sweeney receiving a £358,000 bonus and a salary of £742,000 in November 2023, resulting in total earnings of £1.1m, the FA maintained that Bullingham's performance-oriented compensation package is necessary to compete for top-tier executives.
The FA spokesperson emphasized that Bullingham had successfully met and exceeded predetermined performance targets on and off the pitch, contributing to the FA's 2020-2024 strategic objectives. The statement also highlighted that the bonus and long-term incentive plan payments are contingent upon the achievement of specified performance targets.
