FA Fails to Act on Sexist Chants Targeting Phil Foden: "Sexism Isn't Banter"

**Manchester Derby Marred by Sexist Chants Toward Phil Foden's Mother**

In the latest instance of offensive chants in English football, derogatory songs about Phil Foden's mother were heard during Sunday's Manchester derby at Old Trafford. Despite the chants, which were audible throughout the first half and during Foden's substitution in the 57th minute, the Football Association will not take action against Manchester United, according to its rulebook.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola criticized those joining in the chants, stating they showed "a lack of class" and should be ashamed. Kick It Out chief operating officer Hollie Varney expressed concern over the prevalence of sexist and misogynistic mass chanting in men's football, stating that such chants create an environment where women can feel unsafe or unwelcome.

The FA's rules do prohibit abusive chanting and discriminatory behavior from fans. Rule E20 states that clubs are responsible for ensuring their supporters refrain from improper conduct, including references to gender and gender reassignment. However, the FA does not take action on all offensive chants, as each case is assessed on its own merit. In this instance, the chants would be deemed discriminatory if directed at a female player, but as they were aimed at a non-participant in the game, the rule does not apply.

There is a perception that the FA takes action only in extreme cases, as chances of success are slim. Some believe offensive chants are "part of the game" and have been ongoing since its inception.
