Manchester United's Goalkeeper Under Fire After Mistakes in Europa League Draw Against Lyon
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim admitted he has made more errors than goalkeeper Andre Onana this season, after Onana's performance in the 2-2 draw against Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday. Onana was at fault for both Lyon's goals, with the team now facing an uphill battle in the second leg at Old Trafford next week.
The first goal came after Onana failed to get a strong enough hand to Thiago Almada's wide free-kick, allowing the ball to bounce through his gloves and into the net. The second goal came in the final moments of the game, with Onana spilling Georges Mikautadze's shot and Rayan Cherki tapping in on the rebound.
Former England midfielder Aaron Lennon was critical of Onana's performance, saying "They're two massive mistakes. He has got to save both of them in my opinion and he has cost United today."
Onana has made eight errors leading to goals in all competitions since the start of last season, the most of any keeper playing for a Premier League club. Despite this, Amorim remains confident in his keeper, saying "We continue to do the same thing. Training, seeing the games, trying to choose the best eleven to win every match."
With Manchester United currently 13th in the Premier League table, their only realistic hope of European football next season is through the Champions League spot afforded to the Europa League winner.
