Ancelotti Praises Alonso as One of the Top Globally

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has praised Xabi Alonso as "one of the best in the world" amid rumors that the former midfielder will replace him at the Spanish club. Bayer Leverkusen coach Alonso announced he will leave at the end of the season, setting the stage for his move to Real Madrid once Ancelotti's departure is confirmed. Speaking before Sunday's El Clasico against Barcelona, Ancelotti acknowledged Alonso's impressive performance at Leverkusen, where he led the team to the Bundesliga title and the German Cup in his first full season as a senior club manager. Ancelotti, who won the Champions League with Real in 2014 as a player, refused to comment on his own future with the club. Despite winning 15 trophies across two spells as Real Madrid manager, the team trails Barcelona by four points in the La Liga standings with four matches remaining, and could end the season without a trophy for the first time in four years.
