Matheus Cunha Joins Manchester United in £62.5m Deal
After expressing his desire to compete for titles, Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha has agreed to join Manchester United from Wolves in a £62.5m transfer. Despite United's poor 2024-25 season, Cunha is not deterred, viewing the challenge of reviving the club's fortunes as an opportunity.
Cunha's decision to join United comes at a time when European football is out of reach for the Red Devils, who have not played a Champions League knockout tie in more than three years. However, the 26-year-old forward, who is in peak form, sees United as a bigger club and is not concerned about the risk.
In the 2024-25 Premier League season, Cunha scored 27 goals in 65 appearances, equaling the record for the most goals scored by a Brazilian player in a single season. He is known for his creativity, movement, and sharp finishing, making the difference in tight games. His flair and drive have often unpicked defences with moments of individual brilliance.
While Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Newcastle, and Tottenham prepare for next season's Champions League, United need to boost their options upfront. United's side managed just 44 top-flight goals in 2024-25, a club-record low in the Premier League era. Cunha is expected to provide an instant impact and add experience to the team.
Former England midfielder Fara Williams believes Cunha improves United's squad, stating, "If he does, there is no doubt he improves the squad." Ex-England international Chris Sutton also expressed his support, likening Cunha to Wayne Rooney in his prime.
