Earps stuns England with retirement announcement after losing starting spot

Mary Earps gesticulates to team-mates while holding the ball

England goalkeeper Mary Earps has retired from international football, just five weeks before the Lionesses begin their European Championship defense in Switzerland. Earps, 32, played a significant role in England's Euro 2022 victory but recently lost her starting spot to Chelsea keeper Hannah Hampton. In her career, she made 53 senior appearances for England, won the 2023 Women's Finalissima, and reached the final of the 2023 Women's World Cup. England manager Sarina Wiegman expressed disappointment at Earps' retirement, while the goalkeeper stated that it was the right time to step aside and give younger players an opportunity. Earps won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2023 and the Best Fifa Goalkeeper award in 2022 and 2023.
