Mohamed Salah was instrumental in their success, as was the team's overall strength and consistency. Arsenal finished second, despite reaching the Champions League semi-finals, due to too many draws and a lack of a proven goalscorer. Manchester City, despite finishing third, failed to retain their Champions League title and had a disappointing season by their standards. Chelsea, in fourth place, returned to the Champions League under manager Enzo Maresca, but still search for a reliable goalkeeper and goalscorer. Newcastle United, in fifth, celebrated their first domestic trophy for 70 years with the Carabao Cup win against Liverpool and a return to the Champions League. Aston Villa, in sixth, reached the Champions League quarter-final but were disappointed with their league performance, losing the final day to Manchester United in a controversial match. Nottingham Forest, in seventh, impressed with a solid safety position and European football, while Brighton and Hove Albion, in eighth, finished with a strong showing against Tottenham Hotspur but will look to improve further. Bournemouth, in ninth, threatened the European places but faded towards the end and will have to replace key players. Brentford, in tenth, exceeded expectations under Thomas Frank, while Fulham, in 11th, showed improvement after a poor start under Marco Silva. Crystal Palace, in 12th, won the FA Cup for the first time in their history, while Everton, in 13th, experienced a revival under David Moyes after a dismal start.
