After Liverpool FC secured their first Premier League title in 30 years, fans gathered for a victory parade that was marred by a horrifying incident. A car "rammed" into the crowd on Water Street, injuring dozens of pedestrians, with two suffering serious injuries. The incident occurred just after 18:00 BST.
Witnesses described the terrifying moment, with BBC reporter Matt Cole stating that the car missed him and his family "by literally inches." Ambulances acted as a natural barrier, slowing the car down, but it appeared to have no intention of stopping. The car was being chased by a group of men who tried to bang on the vehicle and throw things at it, with the rear windshield completely smashed in.
Harry Rashid, a spectator at the parade, witnessed the car pulling up before it "rammed into all the people at the side of us." He described the scene as "horrendous" and "extremely fast," with people being knocked off the car's bonnet and lying unconscious on the ground.
Off-duty BBC reporter Dan Ogunshakin and his friend noticed people surrounding a car, which was in front of an ambulance moving through the crowd. They wondered why this was happening until the car reversed, knocked people away, and then accelerated forward towards the crowd. The atmosphere of celebration and joy suddenly turned into fear and terror.
Matthew O'Carroll, another witness, saw the car speeding up and hitting pedestrians. He thought it was someone trying to get away from something but was shocked when the car continued towards the crowd, with people scattering like bowling pins.
Mike Maddra, walking with a group of friends, saw the car "speeding up" and hitting pedestrians. He thought the incident looked deliberate.
The incident has left the city reeling, with many fans, including Mike Maddra, stating that it had ruined the day. Merseyside Police have arrested a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area and are treating the incident as a deliberate attack.
