Arsenal's recent form slump continues as they suffer back-to-back WSL defeats for the first time in a decade, losing 4-2 to Brighton. The Gunners, who were basking in the glory of a remarkable 4-1 victory over Lyon in the Women's Champions League final just a week ago, have now conceded nine goals in their last two league games after shipping 14 in their previous 19 outings.
Caitlin Foord, who scored Arsenal's second goal against Brighton, was critical of her side's performance, stating that they can't let such losses happen again. Head coach Renee Slegers echoed Foord's sentiments, admitting that the side needs to learn from their mistakes and find solutions to prevent similar results in the future.
While Fran Kirby and Jelena Cankovic both scored stunning goals for Brighton, their third and fourth goals came directly from defensive lapses by Arsenal. Sophie Baggaley, the Brighton goalkeeper, made 10 saves to keep her side in the game.
The back-to-back defeats have put Arsenal's second-place finish in the WSL in jeopardy, with Manchester United now just a point behind. A third straight league defeat would see Arsenal slip to third, meaning they would enter next season's Champions League in the second qualifying round rather than the third. However, victory in the Champions League final against Barcelona would secure them a place in next season's new league phase.
