Striker Awoniyi Undergoes Emergency Surgery after Suffering Abdominal Injury in Match

Taiwo Awoniyi injures himself after colliding with the post

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi had an emergency surgery on a severe abdominal injury sustained during the 2-2 draw against Leicester in the Premier League. The 27-year-old Nigerian collided with a post while attempting to get on the end of a cross from Anthony Elanga in the 88th minute. Although he received immediate treatment and managed to continue for a while, Awoniyi was visibly struggling when the game resumed.

The club issued a statement confirming the surgery and expressing their well-wishes to the player. They will provide updates on his progress when appropriate.

Awoniyi, who joined Forest from Union Berlin in June 2022, came on as a late substitute for Ibrahim Sangare in the game. Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis expressed frustration over the handling of Awoniyi's injury, suggesting that the medical staff misjudged his ability to continue playing.

Awoniyi, who was previously with Liverpool from 2015 to 2021 but never made a senior appearance, has scored once in the Premier League for Forest this season.
