United's Humiliating Loss and Strange Procession: A Look at the Club's Troubled Tour

Manchester United won six Premier League games after Ruben Amorim was appointed as head coach in November 2024

Manchester United ended their post-season tour of Asia with a 2-1 win over Hong Kong, after trailing 1-0 at half-time. Youngsters Chido Obi and Ayden Heaven scored the second-half goals for the Red Devils, who had a rocky start to the tour after a surprise 1-0 defeat by a South-East Asia select XI. The trip was primarily aimed at generating commercial revenues, with an estimated £10m expected from the expedition. United's players were not given a choice about being on the tour, as it followed immediately after the final Premier League game of the season.

The tour was marred by off-field incidents, including a one-fingered gesture from Amad Diallo to a fan and a lack of engagement from some players. Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee was also seen leaving the team hotel to get food, while Alejandro Garnacho's brother criticised Ruben Amorim for leaving the Argentina international out of his Europa League starting line-up.

For Amorim, the tour provided another insight into the demands and expectations that come with managing Manchester United. He acknowledged the need for better results in future trips and expressed a desire to return with titles. The tour did not attract the same level of fan support as United's last visit to Malaysia in 2009, when they were Premier League champions.
