Unprocessed Grief: Athlete Struggles with Reality of Devastating Injury

Ella Toone celebrates by pointing to the sky

England midfielder Ella Toone opened up about her emotional journey following the death of her father, Nick, in 2024. Toone played on after her father's passing but admitted that she wasn't enjoying the game as much as she should have been. After suffering a calf injury in November 2022, she took a break from football to focus on her mental health and grieve. Toone started speaking to a counsellor and spent time in Dubai with her partner Joe while undergoing rehab. After nine weeks out, Toone returned to form, scoring six goals in her first five games back for Manchester United, including a hat-trick against Manchester City. She currently is on international duty with England for the Nations League. Her former teammate and best friend, Alessia Russo, was by her side during her difficult times. Toone's teammates from both club and country rallied around her in the dark times. Season Two of the Tooney and Russo Show drops on BBC Sounds and YouTube on Friday 30 May, with new episodes every Monday and Friday.
