Manchester United are reportedly in talks to sign Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo for a fee of £45m plus add-ons, despite their financial struggles and the Europa League final loss to Tottenham denying them a guaranteed Champions League spot and its associated £70m. However, financial expert Kieran Maguire believes United have significant headroom to spend £150m without breaching profit and sustainability rules (PSR). This is due to the accounting practices that divide the cost of new players by the length of their contracts and the potential sales of academy graduates such as Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, and Kobbie Mainoo.
