Chelsea have decided against signing Jadon Sancho permanently, instead opting to pay a £5m penalty to send him back to Manchester United. The 25-year-old winger joined Chelsea on loan last summer following a strained relationship with former United manager Erik ten Hag. United are content with Sancho's departure. Chelsea did not pay a loan fee for Sancho and covered half of his reported £300,000-a-week wages. The Blues had agreed an obligation to buy Sancho for a fee of about 25m if they finished higher than 14th in the Premier League, which they did. However, contract negotiations between the club and Sancho's representatives have failed, with the England player potentially needing to take a pay cut from his United contract. Sancho scored in Chelsea's 4-1 Conference League win over Real Betis, securing their first trophy since February 2022. He ended the season with five goals and 10 assists in 42 games. Despite having a year remaining on his Chelsea contract, Sancho is unlikely to play for them in this month's Club World Cup in the United States.
