Manchester City Hit With £1m Fine for Multiple Late Kick-offs

Manchester City players huddle before their Premier League fixture against Manchester United in December

Manchester City receive over £1m fine for repeatedly delaying match kick-offs and restarts last season, with the longest delay coming before the Manchester Derby in December 2024. The Premier League states that rules regarding kick-offs and restarts help maintain the competition's professional standard and broadcast schedule. City, who were previously fined £2.09m for delaying 22 matches, have accepted the breaches and apologized. The club is also awaiting a verdict on 115 charges of alleged financial rule breaches between 2009 and 2018. City have acknowledged the issues and worked to improve their record, causing fewer delays in the 2024-25 campaign compared to 2023-24. The Premier League's stance is that broadcasters' rights require knowing when matches are likely to end, with controllable factors being kick-off times and half-time breaks.
