Manchester United's £1.2bn Price Tag: The Glazer Family's Financial Burden Revealed

In 2005, the Glazer family took over Manchester United Football Club for £790m, primarily funded by borrowed money, leading to £604m in debt for the club. Since then, the Glazers have paid out approximately £1.2bn in debt interest, repayments, dividends, and fees to themselves. Manchester United's annual commercial revenues have increased fivefold since the takeover, with the implied market value of the club at over £3.2bn in 2025. However, the team finished 15th in the Premier League last season, and the Glazers have not invested any cash of their own since the takeover. Manchester United's gross debt remains at £547m in 2024. In 2024, Jim Ratcliffe purchased a 30% stake in the club for £732m, injecting an additional £236m for stadium infrastructure.
