Manchester United in talks to sign Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo for over £60m
Manchester United are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford for a fee in excess of £60m after seeing a previous bid of £45m rejected earlier in June. Mbeumo, a 25-year-old Cameroon international, scored 20 goals for Brentford last season, the third-highest tally in the Premier League behind Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak. However, his expected goals (xG) statistic suggests that his 20-goal haul might be a one-off, as he outperformed it by 7.7 goals.
If a deal is completed, Mbeumo would join United's recently-signed Matheus Cunha, as the Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim looks to address the team's lack of firepower after their worst Premier League season in 2021-22. Cunha scored 31 goals in 76 games in all competitions for Wolves after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2023, but United fans should be wary about expecting too much in front of goal from the duo, as both players have previously overperformed their expected goals.
Mbeumo prefers to play on the right behind a striker, but also has the versatility to play centrally. He tops the list for touches per 90 minutes for players who scored more than 15 goals, showing his involvement in play, and ranks as one of the best ball carriers in the league. He was 17th on the list of top assisters, with seven, but in terms of expected assists he was top in the Premier League with 9.3.
