Sporting president Frederico Varandas has denied reports of a £59m gentlemen's agreement with Manchester United and Arsenal for striker Viktor Gyokeres, who has a 100m euro (£85m) release clause in his contract. Varandas clarified that the club never promised the Swedish international would leave for 70m euros (£59m) this summer, despite previous speculation. Instead, the club only agreed not to demand the full release clause, acknowledging Gyokeres' age and the improbability of him leaving Portugal for such a high fee at 27 years old. The striker, who scored 97 goals in 102 matches during two seasons in Portugal, spent three seasons with Coventry City in the Championship before joining Sporting under Ruben Amorim.
