Taiwo Awoniyi, Nottingham Forest forward, undergoes surgery for a ruptured intestine following a collision with a goalpost in the 2-2 draw against Leicester City. Awoniyi was taken to the hospital after the match and spent a day in an induced coma following the first stage of the operation. He was woken on Wednesday after the second stage of the operation. Nottingham Forest is set to launch an internal investigation into the handling of Awoniyi's injury during the game, as he was allowed to return to the field despite clear signs of discomfort. Consultant surgeon Professor Gillian Tierney suggests injuries similar to Awoniyi's can be fatal and may take hours to diagnose. The incident has raised questions about the offside law, as Awoniyi was attempting to get on the end of a cross from teammate Anthony Elanga who was offside in the build-up. Former Premier League referee Keith Hackett argues that the practice of assistant referees delaying the flag to indicate offside until the outcome may expose players to the risk of injury. Former England women's midfielder Fara Williams calls for a review of the offside law in light of the incident.
