In a thrilling finale, Sunderland secured their place in the Championship play-off final against Sheffield United after Dan Ballard's dramatic 122nd-minute header sent them through against Coventry City. The hosts had trailed 2-1 on aggregate after the first leg, but a 1-1 draw on the night was enough to see them progress.

Coventry had dominated the game, with Frank Lampard's side having 20 shots to Sunderland's 16, and almost 60% of the ball.
