Dramatic clash of headers at Stadium of Light

Sunderland's Enzo Le Fee kisses goalscorer Dan Ballard's head after he scores the winning goal with a header

In a thrilling finale, Sunderland secured their place in the Championship play-off final against Sheffield United after Dan Ballard's dramatic 122nd-minute header sent them through against Coventry City. The hosts had trailed 2-1 on aggregate after the first leg, but a 1-1 draw on the night was enough to see them progress.

Coventry had dominated the game, with Frank Lampard's side having 20 shots to Sunderland's 16, and almost 60% of the ball. The Sky Blues took the lead through Ephron Mason-Clark with 14 minutes of normal time remaining, but Haji Wright's costly miss in added time allowed Sunderland to equalize, setting up Ballard's decisive strike.

Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris conceded that his side were nervous for the first part of the game, but they improved in extra time and played well enough to secure a memorable victory. Coventry, who finished fifth in the Championship under Lampard, were left to rue their missed chances.
