Gary Lineker, the longtime host of Match of the Day, bid farewell to the show after 26 years in a tearful goodbye. Lineker, who left the BBC due to a social media post controversy, made a nod to the controversy during his final show. He was presented with a commemorative cap and golden boot by pundits Alan Shearer and Micah Richards. Lineker thanked viewers for their support over the years. After his suspension in 2023 for airing opinions beyond football on social media, new rules were issued for presenters posting on social media. Lineker was later criticized for sharing a social media post about Zionism that included an antisemitic illustration. He apologized and left the BBC earlier than expected. Arne Slot, Liverpool manager, paid tribute to Lineker during the show. Lineker's final episode saw him interview Slot as they collected the Premier League trophy. Cates, Chapman, and Logan will take over Match of the Day presenting responsibilities from the start of the 2025-26 season.
