Villa Voice Concern Over Missed Calls in Champions League Bid Failure

Morgan Rogers

Aston Villa have lodged a complaint with the referees' body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) over a "big mistake" by referee Thomas Bramall that denied them a goal and potentially cost them a place in the Champions League. In a 2-0 defeat at Manchester United, Morgan Rogers thought he had given Villa the lead in the 73rd minute, but Bramall blew for a foul despite television footage showing Bayindir did not have two hands on the ball. The VAR could not intervene because the referee stopped play before the ball entered the net. Moments later, Amad Diallo headed United in front and Christian Eriksen's late penalty sealed Villa's defeat. Villa manager Unai Emery was visibly frustrated with the decision to disallow Rogers' goal and award United the penalty. PGMOL declined to comment. Villa captain John McGinn admitted United deserved to win but said the decision not to give the goal was "incredible."
