Quincy Promes, the former Ajax winger, has been extradited to the Netherlands to serve a seven-and-a-half year prison sentence for drug trafficking and aggravated assault. The Dutchman, capped 50 times for the Netherlands, was arrested in Dubai last week at the request of Dutch police. In 2024, he was sentenced to six years in jail for smuggling over a tonne of cocaine into the Netherlands from Belgium in 2020. Additionally, he had been sentenced to 18 months for stabbing his cousin in 2020 but has yet to serve any time for either crime. A spokesperson confirmed that Promes has now returned to the Netherlands. The 33-year-old denies the charges and has filed appeals for both cases.
Promes began his career at Twente, spending three years there before moving to Spartak Moscow for his first stint. After four years in the Russian capital, he joined Sevilla in La Liga but lasted just one year before returning to the Netherlands with Ajax. He re-joined Spartak Moscow in 2021 and then moved to Dubai United in 2024. Promes made his senior debut for Twente in 2009 and earned his first Netherlands cap in 2014, netting seven goals in 50 appearances. It is currently undetermined where he will serve his sentence in the Netherlands.
